Seward is Pilot for New Minneapolis Two-Sort Recyling Project

Seward’s NEW Recycling Project

On March 29, 2011 a NEW type of recycling collection started in a Seward Neighborhood pilot area. Recycling participation now is more convenient for residents in the Seward Enhanced Recycling Pilot Area (see the map below) because a “Two-Sort” system makes recycling easier than under the City’s previous “multi-sort” collection method. In the pilot area residents now are able to sort recyclables into just TWO categories:
  • all paper fiber, and
  • all containers (metal cans, plastic bottles and glass containers and jars).

Residents in the pilot area also are eligible to receive NEW recycling containers to aid with the two-sort system. The Minneapolis Sanitation & Recycling Office will provide two or more recycling receptacles at no cost to residents. There are several choices but the Seward Neighborhood Group encourages residents to request the wheeled, 22 gallon recycling carts with lids as their preferred receptacle.

Residents who want the new containers should complete and return the selection card that the City mailed to residents the week of March 22, 2011. Pilot area residents who did not receive the card (or might have misplaced it) can obtain another by calling the office of Minneapolis Solid Waste & Recycling Services at 612-673-2917 or by contacting SNG co-president, Mike Trdan, at mnmichaelrecycle@gmail.com.

At present the City has no additional publicity planned for this project. For the Enhanced Recycling Pilot Project to succeed, the neighborhood’s help and involvement is needed. The Seward Neighborhood Group is attempting to establish a network of “Recycling Block Coordinators” to inform and educate neighbors about the project. Volunteer Block Coordinators would be asked for about 1/2 to 1 hour of time per month to promote recycling. Residents interested in helping as Block Coordinators should email Mike Trdan, at mnmichaelrecycle@gmail.com.

Community Energy Services - Get a sign if you have had a visit

From: Carol Greenwood <carolgwood@comcast.net>

I’m getting one of these cool signs for my yard (we had a Community Energy Services Visit) and will get a couple more for people I know who’ve had a Home Energy Services visit.  Or, you can contact Kyle Boehm at MNCEE/CES (see attached).  The count so far is 34 Seward residents who got a home energy service visit after Seward signed up for the program.  If you attended a workshop and got a Home Energy Services visit before Seward signed up for the program, check with Kyle also.  Their funding may restrict who gets a sign, but it never hurts to ask.I think we should let people know what a great service this is—$30.00 for $400 worth of products and services. If you’ve attended a workshop, get your Home Visit to find out about the additional opportunities available to save money in your home by conserving energy.

Community Energy Services Workshop at Matthews Park, Jan. 13

Join Over 100 Seward homeowners that have already participated in Community Energy Services.

Community Energy Services, CES,  is a residential energy program that has served over 2,800 Minneapolis homes, including over 100 in Seward already. CES provides free educational workshops where homeowners can learn actions and techniques for saving energy and money in their home.  Homeowners are then eligible to schedule a customized home visit.  This visit includes two energy experts spending an hour and a half with the homeowner in their home.  During that time they will perform a blower door test, which measures for air leaks and install materials.  These materials may include: compact fluorescent light bulbs, low-flow showerheads, faucet aerators, pipe wrap and more.  Homeowners also qualify for specialized rebates available to only participants of this program.

An additional workshop is taking place on Thursday, January 13, 2011 at Matthews Park Recreation Center at 6:30 P.M.  To reserve your spot, for more information, or for additional dates please contact Kyle Boehm at (612) 219-7334 or kboehm@mncee.org.  Please visit our website at www.mnces.org.

Community Energy Services is a partnership between the Center for Energy and Environment, City of Minneapolis, CenterPoint Energy, Seward Neighborhood Group, and Xcel Energy with funding provided by the Minnesota and Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund and the City of Minneapolis Block Grant Funding. This e-mail transmission and any attachments accompanying it may contain confidential and/or proprietary  information and is intended only for the person or entity to whom it was originally addressed.   If you are not the intended recipient, you are hereby notified that any disclosure, copying, distribution or other use  of this information is strictly prohibited.
